France football has announced the full list of nominees for the Women’s 2022 Ballon d’Or.
The Women’s Ballon d’Or
The women’s Ballon d’Or award recognises Europe’s best female players over the past 12 months. Although the men’s version of the Ballon d’Or has been in existence for several years, the Ballon d’Or Feminin has only just begun.
The inaugural edition of the Ballon d’Or Feminin was held back in 2018 and was won by Norwegian Ada Hegerberg, who plays for Lyon. The following year, United States women’s national team star Megan Rapinoe took the prize.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 ceremony had to be cancelled, taking a one-year hiatus. However, it resumed last year, when Barcelona star Alexia Putellas won the award, becoming just the third female player to win a Golden Ball.
The question now is whether she will be able to retain the prize and become the first female consecutive winner of the Ballon d’Or. This year’s Women’s Ballon d’Or will take place on October 17.
