Indian weightlifter Vikas Thakur won silver in the men’s 96kg division at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday. At the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull, Vikas Thakur registered a total lift of 346 kg (snatch – 155 kg; clean and jerk – 191 kg).

2022 Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Latest Results, Upcoming Schedule, Date, Time, And Venue
Vikas Thakur appeared to be in good shape right away, posting three successful snatch attempts of 149 kg, 153 kg, and 155 kg. However, with Don Opeloge of Samoa and Cyrille Tchatchet II of England clocking 171kg and 158kg in snatch, respectively, it appeared that the Indian could have to compete against Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi of Fiji for the bronze.
However, the situation altered during clean and jerk when Cyrille Tchatchet II hurt himself on his first effort and failed to log any valid attempts, which resulted in him being unranked. Vikas Thakur lifted 187 and 191 kilograms successfully before failing with his final effort at 198 kilograms. However, it was sufficient to defeat Rainibogi, who took home the bronze medal with 343kg (155kg+188kg). In the event, Don Opeloge won the gold medal with a 381kg (171kg+210kg) total, a record for the event.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes have dominated the weightlifting competition, taking home three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
