Since 1950, weightlifting has been a sport at the Commonwealth Games. It must be a part of every edition of the Games’ sporting schedule because it is a fundamental sport. At the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, 17 events—eight for men, seven for women, and two for powerlifting—were competed in.

In 2002, the first women’s competitions were added. There were up to 46 gold medals awarded in 2002, with medals given out for the individual clean-and-jerk, snatch, and combined phases between 1990 and 2002. As is the situation at the Olympics, medals are only given out based on the total of these two segments since 2006.

Indian Contingent for 2022 Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Events

Mirabai Chanu, the incumbent Commonwealth Games champion and silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, will be the headliner of India’s 12-member weightlifting team at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. The remaining eight qualified in the Singapore Weightlifting International 2022, while Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli, Ajay Singh, and Purnima Pandey earned their tickets by winning gold medals in their respective divisions at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in December.

At the Commonwealth Games 2022, Mirabai Chanu was supposed to participate in the 55kg division rather than her usual 49kg event, but she was forced to switch due to last-minute regulation changes.
