CEO of the popular sports gear brand Nike John Donahoe listed this sports apparel giant as a Chinese brand. Nike has been operational in China for quite a long while now. Nike China is a brand of China basically so according to its CEO John, it is for Chinese people only.
The Communist Chinese government believes that sports apparel brand Nike China is implementing forced labor practices on Chinese people. Nike regarded this statement as a false one.
John Donahoe Comments On Nike Relations With China Amongst Boycott Call Over Uyghur Controvery
John said, “We are the largest sports brand there, and we are a brand of China and for China”. And the biggest asset we have in China is consumer equity.” Also, John added that consumers in China have a strong connection with brands like Nike, Jordan, and Converse during the earning call.
Nike is trading quite well in China and has provided Chinese people with an ample amount of job opportunities.
Nike China Forced Labour China Controversy
Recently Nike in China came under fire for a comment that pointed towards forced labor practices. The U.S. and a lot of other countries have also responded to forced labor sanctions recently. Chinese people that’s why have started boycotting all such brands. H&M is also included in this massive boycott moment by the Chinese people.
As a result of which the Chinese government has advised companies, not to source cotton from regions where the economy can be undetermined. U.S.-based companies are mainly facing issues in China because of this cotton sourcing scenario. They now need to bend their practices for satisfying the communist government of China.
Apple Blocks China
Apart from these apparel brands, Apple also recently blocked some of its policies in China because they were against the government policies. The Chinese government was demanding censorship of the AppStore in order to meet the requirements of the regulator. This is not happening for the first time in China, in the past as well many such incidents have taken place under the leadership of the Chinese government.
