The 44th Chess Olympiad, the biggest chess event in the world, will be held in Chennai under the auspices of India from 28th July till 10th August. The All India Chess Federation is in charge of organizing the entire competition in India, and they have done everything in their power to make it the biggest.

187 teams in the Open section and 162 in the Women’s will gather in Chennai, India, from July 28 to August 10.

Chess Olympiad 2022 Schedule, Venue, And Host Country

The Fédération Internationale des Échecs will host the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India in the summer of 2022. Earlier, the event was originally set to take place from August 5–17, 2020, however it was postponed and rescheduled because to rising fears about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will take place in Chennai from July 28 to August 10, 2022, according to the FIDE calendar. The convention facility of the Four Points by Sheraton in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai, will be the location.

On July 28, Chennai will host a dazzling opening ceremony to officially begin the 44th Chess Olympiad. For the first time ever, India will serve as the host nation for the Chess Olympiad, and a record-breaking 187 nations are expected to compete. National chess federations participate in classical games at the Chess Olympiad for gold medals, trophies, and the distinction of being the world’s top chess nation.

Chess Olympiad 2022 Format, Schedule, Date, Time, Trophy, And Other Details

The Swiss method will be used to play the competition. All games will have a time limit of 90 minutes every 40 moves, plus an additional 30 minutes after the 40th move, with a 30 second increment. A draw request can be made by a player at any moment during the game.

There will be a total of 11 rounds in which each team will play another team in a four-on-four matchup. Each team may submit one name for the reserve roster. Teams will be rated based on the match points they have earned in each round. When two or more teams have the same number of match points, the tie-breaker will be decided using a variety of factors.

The Chess Olympiad will begin on July 28 at 19:00 IST and end on August 9 at 16:00 IST with respective opening and closing ceremonies. Rounds of the tournament will begin on July 29 and conclude with the championship round on August 9. All rounds will begin at 15:00 IST, with the exception of the championship round, which will begin at 10:00 IST. After the sixth round of the competition, there will be one rest day on August 4. The Arbiters meeting and the Captains meeting will both be held on July 28 at 17:00 GET and 09:30 GET, respectively.

The Hamilton-Russell Cup, which was presented by English magnate Frederick Hamilton-Russell as a prize for the 1st Olympiad, is awarded to the winning team in the open section. The victorious team keeps the cup until the following event.

Women’s Section

2022 Chess Olympiad Logo and Live Streaming Details

The official logo and mascot were unveiled on June 9, 2022, at a ceremony held at the Ripon Building by M. K. Stalin. The mascot’s name is Thambi, and he is a Chess Knight wearing traditional Tamil men’s clothing, including a white shirt and folded hands that appear to be extending the Tamil greeting Vanakkam.

Fans will be able to use Chessbase for streaming the Chess Olympiad matches live in India but the Chess Olympiad will also be televised live by Doordarshan, the country’s public broadcaster.
