24 Hours Of Le Mans Virtual 2022 Final Winner, Results, Standings, Teams
At 2 p.m. CET on Saturday, January 15, 2022, Formula 2 driver Drugovich in the #70 Realteam Hydrogen Redline led the 50-car, 200-driver field away.
His teammate Rietveld claimed pole position the day before in a tense qualifying session, only two thousandths of a second ahead of the #123 Team Redline entry driven by Max Verstappen.
After a thrilling lap by Scuderia AlphaTauri F1 esports incumbent Sebastian Job, Red Bull Racing Esports in the Corvette took pole position in GTE.
The GTE pole-sitter #111, the #56 Team Project 1 x BPM Porsche, and the #5 Williams Esports LMP all received six-minute pitlane penalties prior to the race starting for not fielding the required number of ‘pro’ classed drivers.
Unfortunately, during the electric-hydrogen LMPH2G-led formation lap, the #31 W Series BMW GTE entry encountered a hardware issue and retired before the start.
Drama At Le Mans Virtual
While Drugovich led the pack through the first two corners of the race at the 24 Hours Of Le Mans Virtual, his lead was short-lived as Verstappen surged by him into Tertre Rouge on the first lap.
From then, he tried to open up a distance, but the #28 Veloce Esports car, driven by British GT race champion James Baldwin, had gone from fourth on the grid to second in the early stages. He was on the lookout for the Formula One world champion.
With Verstappen vs. Baldwin, Redline versus. Veloce, it set the tone for the first six hours.
A huge collision further back in the field threatened to terminate the race early for the championship-leading #4 Floyd ByKolles-Burst vehicle when Franco Colapinto in the #31 Team WRT SIMTAG Esports speared across the grass and into the Tom Dillmann-driven entry – but both were able to continue.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas had hoped to make a successful return to Circuit de la Sarthe, but Dani Juncadella mistimed a downshift, over-revved the engine, and the team was forced to retire after three hours.
