A 35-year-old Sufi spiritual leader who hailed from Afghanistan was shot dead by a group of four unidentified persons in Yeola town of state Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Tuesday. The murder of Sufi Baba Aka Zarif Chishti was confirmed by Nashik police.

Sufi Baba Aka Zarif Chishti
The victim has been identified as Khwaja Sayyad Ahmed Zarif Chishti, who was well known as ‘Sufi Baba’ in Yeola, as per media reports. A possible motive which was behind the murder is not yet known. Moreover, the Nashik Rural Police Superintendent Mr. Sachin Patil told reporters that the incident took place due to a financial dispute of property issues between the Khwaja Sayyad Ahmed and the suspects.
On Tuesday, Sufi Baba Aka Zarif Chishti and the accused persons had gone to Yeola from Vavi, where he used to live. After having lunch together, they went to the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area to worship at an open plot they were trying to buy. “One of the accused people pulled a firearm and fired a round at Sufi Baba’s head, following which he died on the spot”, stated Patil.
The Afghan-origin Sufi Baba was a refugee from the nation Pakistan who came to India four years ago and the Government of India had given him a refugee pass and an extension of two years to stay in the country. The spiritual leader Sufi Baba stayed in Delhi, Karnataka, India and later on in the Nashik district.
Media sources stated that being a foreign national, “Sufi Bab was not able to purchase a property in his name and hence he used to buy properties in his follower’s names”. He also owned an official YouTube channel, which has a considerable number of subscribers both in India and also in abroad who followed him. He was popular among people for giving motivational speeches on his official YouTube channel. He earned a lot of money by gaining followers.
