After Michael Morton had been in charge for six months, the Minstermen waved him farewell following their 3-1 home loss to Rochdale. Currently, York is rated number 23 in the National League.

After David Webb was fired in February, Morton assumed the position on an interim basis. He remained in the position this season, however his team hasn’t won a game. The club was struggling to keep its league existence when Webb was hired to replace John Askey. Morton took over and guided the team to a 19th-place finish in the previous season.

As the club begins the hiring process for a new manager, Tony McMahon, the assistant manager, will now act as temporary manager.

Favourites to become new York City manager

Another Vanarama National League manager is the current favourite to succeed Michael Morton as York City’s next manager, according the odds.

Due to his fantastic results with the Heed, Williamson, the current Gateshead manager, is the current favourite to succeed Morton. Gateshead was promoted to the National League in the same year as York under the leadership of Williamson, who has been in charge of the team since 2019.

After overseeing 165 games, the 39-year-old still has a 46.7% win ratio and has contributed to the continued success of Gateshead with his lively style of play and belief in some of the team’s younger players. Last year, Williamson oversaw Gateshead as they advanced to the Isuzu FA Trophy final.
