The XFL is the first professional football league in the nation to have a higher-than-average proportion of female referees and officials, this represents a significant advancement for other leagues trying to hire more female officials.

While the salary per game of a XFL referee isn’t known, according to Sporting News, the highest paid NFL refs make $250,000 annually and NFL referees on average usually make about $205,000 per year.

Whaley and executive vice president of football operations Marc Ross have meanwhile pitched agents on deals that would pay players $5,000 per week with a $1,000 bonus per win in salary. Including other potential bonuses, the average player would be estimated to earn about $60,000 from training camp through the end of the season and the XFL also valued its benefits package as worth an additional $20,000, in addition to paying for housing and two meals a day during the season.

To show the world that they are an inclusive league and support women, the XFL has a long list of six female referees for the 2023 season.

Krystle Apellaniz

Catherine “Cat” Conti

Cat was the first woman to officiate a Big 12 game, and the Big 12 Conference appointed her as the referee.  She worked as a waitress before becoming a referee, she also works as a trainer and speaker in addition to being a referee.

Amanda Sauer

She is the memeber for the Big 10 conference and was the only female player there in 2021.

She lost her husband, Peter, in 2012, and claimed that turning into a referee had aided her in getting better and healed her.

Karina Tovar

She made history in 2021 as the first female on-field official in the ACC. Her career started out as a side job as a basketball referee at Cal State Northridge.
