His next destination was Real Sociedad B, where Alonso not only honed his coaching skills but also retraced his steps to the club where he had initially developed as a youth player.
Three seasons were spent meticulously crafting his management style, preparing him for the bigger challenges that lay ahead.
In June 2022, the call came from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, who were in dire need of a change in leadership following a dismal start to their season. Alonso wasted no time in making his mark, debuting with an emphatic 4-0 win over Schalke. He then steered Leverkusen to a commendable sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga, securing a spot in the Europa League in the process.
The following season, Leverkusen reached the Europa League semifinals, narrowly losing out to Roma, managed by none other than Jose Mourinho, who had coached Alonso during his time at Real Madrid.
Let’s take a closer look at his managerial records and statistics:
Real Madrid (Youth Team): 2018-2019 (No senior matches)
Real Sociedad B: 2019-2022 (40 wins, 23 draws, 35 losses)
Bayer Leverkusen: 2022-present (23 wins, 11 draws, 10 losses)
The most exciting development in Xabi Alonso’s managerial career is the persistent speculation linking him to a return to Real Madrid, this time as the head coach.

As Carlo Ancelotti is expected to take charge of the Brazil national team after the 2023/24 season, the stage seems set for Alonso to step into the spotlight at one of the world’s most prestigious clubs.
Alonso, who signed a two-season contract in October 2022, has seen it extended by two more seasons and acording to ‘Bild’, the Munich club has significantly increased the salary of the former Spanish international, who now earns six million euros per year and is among the highest paid in the German championship. He has a net worth of $20 million.
