After completing his schooling, he earned a BA degree in biology from Williams College in 1987. Later, he attended Louisiana State University where he earned MD in 1993. Following the completion of his residency at the LSU School of Medicine in 2005, he began practicing internal medicine.

After practicing for several years, Dr John Amoss joined the faculty of the University of Utah’s Comprehensive Medicine Section in 1996, where he worked until 2010. During his tenure, he was appointed as the first Section Chief of the newly established Hospital Medicine Section.
