The WWE announced on Wednesday that Billy Graham, a “Superstar” and the Hall of Fame wrestler, died at the age of 79.

Bruno Sammartino’s second championship run was ended in 1977 by Graham, who was actually born Eldridge Wayne Coleman.

Before losing it to Bob Backlund, he defended the championship for nearly a year against Dusty Rhodes, Gorilla Monsoon, and “High Chief” Peter Maivia.

Graham was a pioneer of the outrageous promos that would come to characterise professional wrestling, and he also had the kind of bulky body that would later serve as the standard for WWE champions.

The bodybuilder once shared the “Muscle and Fitness” cover with Arnold Schwarzenegger and had a bench press capacity of 605 pounds. He also participated in strongman tournaments.

WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair tweeted:


The Superstar Billy Graham just left us. Thank you for all your influence on my career.”

He stopped fighting in the ring at the age of 44 and switched to coaching athletes that appear on television.

Graham was given a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame by Triple H in 2004.

What led to Billy Graham’s demise, and why?

The WWE superstar’s wife, Valerie, provided a health update on his Facebook page on Monday. She insisted that she had fought against turning off his life support.

Valerie, Graham’s wife, continued:


Please urgent prayers needed for my husband. The doctors wanted to remove him from life support tonight, I refused. He’s a fighter and his will is strong even if his body isn’t. God is our hope.”

WWE quickly followed with a statement that read:

WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham has passed away.”

There is no real reason why he died however, Graham battled health issues for many years. He underwent a liver transplant in 2002, and in the years leading up to his death, he battled diabetes, organ failure, and other issues.


Billy was hospitalized in January 2023 with ear and head infections and in April, Billy’s condition worsened; Billy died on May 17, after being placed on life support earlier that week.

Billy’s net worth in 2023 was around $5 Million. Billy debuted in Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Affiliation situated in Minneapolis, where Billy took on the moniker “Genius” and as Billy visited the north-focal states and nearby areas of Canada, Billy fought with Gagne, The Smasher, The Bruiser, Wahoo McDaniel, Billy Robinson, Ken Patera, and Ivan Koloff, the last option becoming Billy’s tag-group accomplice.
