Indian paddlers Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee lost in their respective round-of-16 women’s singles matches at the WTT Star Contender Goa 2023, ending their title quest. Earlier on Thursday, both of them won their round-of-32 matches after defeating elite opponents, but they were unable to replicate those victories on Friday at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium. In the evening session, China’s Qian Tanyi defeated Indian ace Manika Batra by score of 6-11,3-11,11-9,11-7. Meanwhile, Sutirtha fell against Portuguese star Fu Yu by score of 11-5,11-7,11-5 in the rematch from 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In the Men’s Singles round of 16 at WTT Star Contender Goa, Felix Lebrun defeated Truls Moregard to record his finest victory to date. Lebrun, who was only 16 years old and ranked No. 60 in the world, was a lopsided underdog going into the match but stunned the world by upsetting World No. 6 Moregard 3-1. Jang Woojin, who had a fantastic evening of table tennis himself by defeating World No. 11 Dang Qiu, will be Lebrun’s opponent in the quarterfinal.
