Career/accomplishments
Sakshi Malik chose to become a professional wrestler when she was just 12 years old. She began her training at the Chotu Ram Akhada (arena) in Rohtak with coach Ishwar Dahiya. She rose to prominence after winning a silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Sakshi Malik won bronze in the women’s 60kg division at the 2015 Asian Championships in Doha.
Sakshi Malik made history at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal. She won a bronze medal in the Yesar Dogu Tournament in Istanbul in 2022. Sakshi Malik won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham the same year.
Sakshi Malik has received the Padma Shri (2017), Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (2016), and cash prizes totalling more than 5.7 crores INR for her achievements in the sport of wrestling. She presently works for Indian Railways.
