Since last year, wrestlers have been protesting against her WFI president and accusing him of sexually abusing athletes. The protests came into the limelight after some prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, also joined the protests.

Who is Geeta Phogat?
Geeta Phogat is a well-known Indian wrestler. She has been in the news because she extended her support to the ongoing protests of athletes against current WFI head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
She was born on December 15, 1988, in Balali village, Haryana, India. Her father’s name is Mahavir Singh Phogat, who is a former wrestler, and her mother’s name is Shobha Kaur, who is a housewife. She also has three sisters named Babita Phogat, Sangita Phogat, and Ritu Phogat. All of her sisters are also wrestlers.
After completing her schooling at a local school, Geeta Phogat attended MDU, Rohtak, Haryana.
She is married, and her husband’s name is Pawan Kumar, who is also a wrestler. The couple also became parents to one son.

Her career
In her adolescent years, Geeta Phogat began her remarkable career in wrestling. She began with the regional akharas. Later, she started participating in international and national competitions.
At the 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Jalandhar, Punjab, she won the gold medal. The following year, she went on to overcome Australia’s opponent in the women’s wrestling final, giving India its first-ever gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
At the 2012 Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Geeta Phogat continued his winning streak with a gold medal. However, she faced a setback at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she lost her opening fight to Canadian wrestler Tonya Verbeek.
Soon, she won a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships held in Canada. She also secured a bronze medal at the 2012 Asian Wrestling Championships in the 55 kg category.
Her medal-winning streak continued with a silver medal at the 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in South Africa and a bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha. However, her campaign at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas was cut short when Geeta Phogat lost to nine-time world champion Kaori Icho from Japan.
