Craig Breen, an Irish rally driver, has died after a terrible accident at a test for next week’s Rally Croatia, know his death cause and age

The 33-year-old driver for the Hyundai team crashed while training on asphalt roads in Croatia.

His injuries were so bad that he died from them. James Fulton, who was riding with him, was not hurt in the crash.

Craig Breen was getting ready for his second WRC race of the season as Hyundai’s third driver. He had just come back to the South Korean brand for a second time after spending all of last year with M-Sport-Ford. He had just come second in Rally Sweden in February, which was his first WRC race of the season.

Breen started out racing on a track, but in 2009 he moved to rallying. In 2010, he raced in the British Rally Championship and the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. The following year, he moved up to the WRC, where he raced in the WRC Academy and won the first Academy Cup.

Craig Breen’s big break came in 2016 when he drove a part-time Citroen DS3 at Rally Finland and got his first place. He stayed with Citroen until the end of the 2018 season. From 2019 to 2021, he worked part-time for Hyundai, where he won four podium spots in nine races. Last year, Breen moved to M-Sport, but in 2023, he went back to Hyundai.

The 33 year old was unmarried and single at the time of his death.

Hyundai mourns the loss of WRC driver Craig Breen with heartfelt statement

The WRC community was saddened by Craig Breen’s death, and Hyundai sent respects to his family, friends, and fans. In a short statement, the team confirmed the news: “Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that driver Craig Breen today lost his life following an accident during the pre-event test for Croatia Rally. Co-driver James Fulton was unharmed in the incident that occurred just after midday local time. Hyundai Motorsport sends its sincerest condolences to Craig’s family, friends, and his many fans. Hyundai Motorsport will make no further comment at this time.”

WRC issues statement expressing shock and sadness at Craig Breen’s passing

In a statement, the WRC said, “The WRC family is shocked and saddened to learn of Craig Breen’s passing. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Craig at this incredibly sad time.”

FIA President Ben Sulayem also sent his sympathies, saying, “On behalf of the FIA, I extend sincere condolences to the family & friends of Craig Breen following his passing during a private testing accident in Croatia. Our thoughts & prayers are with his loved ones & the Rally community at this difficult time.”

In his 82 WRC events, Craig Breen finished on the podium nine times, and he won 30 WRC stages. His death sent shock waves through the rallying world, and fans and rivals alike will miss him a lot.
