After round two of the WR Chess Masters 2023, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Wesley So, Gukesh, & Levon Aronian are tied for the lead with 1.5 points each. On Thursday, Andrey Esipenko outperformed Vincent Keymer and was highlighted in the round-one Game of the Day. Yet, he was defeated in the second-round by a resurgent Abdusattorov, who earned the whole point with his stellar play.
Gukesh won his round-two clash by defeating compatriot Praggnanandhaa, who is sitting at the bottom position with zero points. Meanwhile, Wesley So failed to maintain his winning run after he settled for a draw against Dutch ace Anish Giri and similarly, Aronian could only gather a draw against local favorite Vincent Keymer.
This competition will take place at the Hyatt Regency from February 14 to February 27. The time limit for each game in this tournament is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the following 20 moves, and then 15 minutes, with 30-second increments beginning at move 61. According to the official schedule, Saturday’s action will see Wesley So face-off against Indian prodigy Gukesh with leadership of the field at stake.
WR Chess Masters 2023 prize money pool & standings
During the 2023 WR Chess Masters, prizes totaling 130,000 euros will be given out, with the winning player receiving 40,000 euros. The remaining 90,000 euros will be split between the players based on how they each finish. Currently, Wesley So alongside three other GMs are leading the race to win this prestigious title with 1.5 points from two games.
