In the WR Chess Masters 2023 on Wednesday, Levon Aronian came close to extending his lead with a victory, but Wesley So avoided the threat to secure a hard-fought draw. Despite the draw, Aronian is still in the lead by one point after round six’s five games ended in draws, which left the standings in tact. With the black pieces, Praggnanandhaa performed better than Anish Giri, but he was unable to score the full point. Vincent Keymer performed a stunning exchange sacrifice in another thrilling game, but he settled for a draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov successfully defended against Indian prodigy Gukesh’s attempts of winning the game through a well-executed endgame. Meanwhile, Esipenko managed to hold his fort despite Nepomniachtchi’s bold moves of winning the match in his favor. Following Wednesday’s matches Ian Nepominachtchi is sitting fourth in the standings with six draws in as many matches.
Leader Aronian will face top-seed Nepomniachtchi on Thursday in a titanic match that could be crucial in deciding the winner. In the meantime, Wesley So, who is currently in second position, will face-off against Indian prodigy Pragg in an effort to move up the rankings.
