Indian opener Smriti Mandhana became the first ever player to be sold in the WPL 2023 and also the most expensive player.
Meaning behind the WPL 2023 logo
Ahead of the WPL 2023 auction bidding, BCCI President Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal officially unveiled the logo for the tournament. The WPL 2023 logo features a silhouette of a female cricketer swinging her bat, next to the tournamentโs name.
While speaking about the upcoming tournament, Roger Binny stated:
Itโs a landmark today for womenโs cricket as we begin a new journey. The Womenโs Premier League is going to change the landscape of womenโs cricket.”
Binny further added:
Interest that womenโs cricket has garnered is overwhelming. Hope the players are going to go under the hammer are as excited as us. There will be domestic players as well who will be hoping to make a mark for their franchise and eventually for their countries as well. We have seen unheard talents becoming household names in the menโs league. Hopefully that is what happens in the WPL as well.โ
WPL 2023 Auction
Ahead of the actual tournament, the inaugural WPL Auction took place on 13 February 2023. The five franchises bought 87 players out of the maximum limit of 90. Meanwhile, out of those 87 players, each team bought 6 overseas players filling out all the 30 overseas players slots.
India opener Smriti Mandhana made WPL history after becoming both the first player to go under the hammer and also becoming the most expensive player. The Royal Challengers Bangalore bought her for a whopping โน3.4 crores. Meanwhile, among the overseas players, Nat Sciver (Mumbai Indians) and Ash Gardner (Gujarat Giants) were the most expensive players at the WPL auction. Both the players were bought for โน3.2 crore each.
Mumbai Indians managed to buy India captain Harmanpreet Kaur for โน1.8 crore. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals bought Jemimah Rodrigues for a โน2.2 crore contract.
Meanwhile, Agra-born all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the second-most expensive Indian after UP Warriorz spent โน2.6 crore to secure her signature. Besides Deepti, UP also secured the No.1 ranked T20I bowler, Sophie Ecclestone, for โน1.8 crore. USAโs Tara Norris was the only player from the Associates who got sold in the WPL Auction.
