The Women’s IPL is getting ready for its first-ever auction, and interest is high. The WPL 2023 Player Auction has attracted around 1000 players, giving BCCI an IPL-like windfall in registrations. The list will be trimmed by the Indian Cricket Board before the WPL Auction, which is scheduled for February 13 in Mumbai.

The WPL’s inaugural season begins in March and is already expected to revolutionise women’s cricket. Nevertheless, even though there are a restricted number of places available, there is a sizable interest from the player’s perspective to be a part of history. There has been a lot of interest, and up to 1000 cricketers have registered for the WPL auction. The tournament is expected to be played across two venues in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and the Wankhede Stadium has been earmarked for the IPL, while Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium are set to host WPL. Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune is being blocked as a back-up option. The first season will have 22 matches.
WPL squad size, budget cap and base salary
The WPL 2023 Player Auction will only include 90 players for sale. There is a cap of 18 players per squad for each team. On January 25, the teams were officially announced, joining IPL heavyweights Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The BCCI will cut the list, just like in the IPL, before giving it to the teams for the auction. The player pool will probably be cut to 150, according to rumours. The deadline for player registration passed on January 27. The players’ reserved basic prices have been defined by the BCCI as being Rs 50, 40, and 20 lakhs. For uncapped players, the amounts are Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh. The wage budget for each squad would be Rs 12 crore.
WPL Auction 2023: What is currently known?
- The Inuargal WPL will take place from March 4 to March 26.
- In total, five teams were sold for INR 4669.9 crore.
- Nearly a thousand players have signed up for the inaugural WPL Player Auction.
- At the tournament, a maximum of 90 players may be purchased.

Auction date, time and venue
Mumbai will be revealed as the location for the WPL Auction, as was previously stated by the BCCI. On February 13, the Player auction will take place at the Jio World Centre in BKC. The Jio Centre also becomes available after the Mumbai Comic Con on the 11th and 12th, and the Indian board had problems securing a hotel.
However, the five franchisees have not yet received official notification of the time and location of the auction, though. Later this week, a formal announcement is anticipated addressing the same.
