In the women’s event, India finds itself in Group 1 facing tough competitors, including defending champions China.

Under Mukherjee and Akula’s guidance, the Indian women’s team exhibited determination in their showdown against China at the World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in Busan. Mukherjee, who won a bronze medal in the Asian Games doubles event the year before, surprised onlookers by beating Sun Yingsha 3-1 (10-12, 11-2, 11-13, 6-11) in the first match.
Following Mukherjee’s triumph, the Chinese team, led by Wang Manyu, evened the score by defeating Manika Batra, India’s top-ranked singles player, in the second match. However, Sreeja Akula, ranked 49th globally, reclaimed the lead for India by defeating Wang Yidi in straight sets (7-11, 9-11, 11-13) in the third match.
India had an edge, but China made a strong return, winning the last two games. Sun Yingsha defeated Batra, and Wang Manyu beat Mukherjee, sealing China’s triumph. The Indian men’s team, captained by Sharath Kamal, will kick off against Chile in their first match on Saturday, while the Indian women’s team will take on Hungary in their upcoming match on Sunday.
