Satwik and Chirag had beaten the English Badminton players Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in continuous games but it was Chinese Badminton players Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin’s were fortunate enough to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Chirag is currently placed at number 10 position in the world ranking and Satwik is currently placed at the number 22 position.
Both Satwik and Chirag had won straight games against Ben Lane and Sean Vendy but couldn’t qualify for the quarterfinals in the Men’s double of the Tokyo Olympics. The Indian Badminton players won the match by 21-17 and 21-19, but their Chinese counterpart Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin victory stopped them from reaching the quarterfinals.

Chirag Shetty currently holds the number 10 position in the world ranking and Satwik Sairaj currently holds number 22 position in the world ranking. When they both are paired together, they are ranked as number 10th position in the Men’s doubles event.
Why they couldn’t qualify for the quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics?
The Indian Men’s double Pair Satwik and Chirag had lost to Minions, the World No.1 Indonesian pair Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon in their last match by 21-13 and 21-12. The match got over in just 30 minutes. They could have qualified for the quarter-finals had the World No.3 Chinese pair didn’t defeat the Minions. The Chinese-duo had won the match by 21-18, 21-15, 21-17.
The Indian pair had ended its campaign at the Tokyo Olympic on a win. And only two pairs i.e., the Minions and the Chinese Taipei pair, would be going to the quarterfinals.
What does the tie breaker badminton rule at Tokyo Olympics 2021 say?
According to different calculations of the tie-breaker rule, in order to qualify for the quarterfinal match, the difference between number of games won and lost by a team is calculated. Indonesia had won 5 and lost 2, Chinese Taipei had won 5 and lost 2 and India had won 4 and lost 3 matches respectively.
During the match, the Indian men were dominating in the initial stages and were able to take control from 7-7 in the first game. On the other hand, the English Badminton players were trying to close the gap 17-19, but the Indian team didn’t let that happen.
Lane and Vendy were dominating in the second game, which was a decider as the scores were 19-18. The Indian men made a comeback and gained the last three points and had won the match.
