In a thrilling match, Van den Bergh overcame Wright 16-14 to go to his third straight World Matchplay semi-final and exact revenge for losing to the Scot in the final the year before. Meanwhile, Van Gerwen then overcame Nathan Aspinall’s amazing comeback to win by the same margin, hitting a superb 146 finish to win in an exciting decider leg.
In the opening match of the night, Van den Bergh triumphed despite Wright’s four-ton-plus finishes. der Bergh averaged 102 and hit 11 maximums to earn his first televised victory over the World Champion. Wright wired two darts at double for a 14-12 lead after the duo traded maximums.
Van den Bergh capitalized by throwing consecutive legs of 11 and 12 darts to gain the advantage. Moments later, the 2020 champion narrowly missed a stunning 164 finish, but he regained composure, moving one leg away with a 13-darter, before finishing with a fantastic 177 and pinning double 16 to round off a classic.
The next two quarterfinal contests on Friday night will determine the semifinal lineup for Saturday. Danny Noppert, the UK Open champion, will begin the action against Dirk van Duijvenbode, his Dutch World Cup of Darts partner, before Gerwyn Price, the second-ranked player in the world, takes against Jose De Sousa, a previous Grand Slam champion.
In the second quarterfinal on Thursday, Van Gerwen put on a polished performance to defeat the usually tenacious Aspinall, who rallied from an 11-4 deficit to make a historic comeback attempt. Van Gerwen, though, was unstoppable and produced a magnificent 146 checkout on double 13 to secure the victory and maintain his chances of winning the Phil Taylor Trophy for a third time.
