All matches in the first round followed the best of 19 legs format. All of the games in the second round will be best-of-21-leg affairs. In a heated match at the beach, former champion Cross overcame a deficit of 8-2 to upset Dobey 11-9, and world number two Price outlasted Martin Schindler 10-8. De Sousa defeated Gabriel Clemens 10-6 and advanced to the round of 16 for the second year in a row with a stunning 136 checkout.

The world number seven led the competition the entire time, but a brutal bounce-out prevented him from finishing with two double-tops on 100 for a 10-5 victory, so he had to wait for the right opportunity to win. Gerwyn Price of Wales will play Dave Chisnall in the second round as the five-time quarterfinalist showed his tenacity by defeating Kim Huybrechts 10-7.

Four past World Matchplay champions will hit the stage on Tuesday as the first four second round matches get underway. In the first match of the evening, 2020 champion Dimitri Van den Bergh will compete against Rowby-John Rodriguez, while 2007 champion James Wade will compete against Nathan Aspinall. Before the night’s final match, which pits two-time winner Michael van Gerwen against Joe Cullen, world number one Peter Wright takes on Krzysztof Ratajski.
