Meikle won the first set with a high average, but Barneveld roared back to tie the match with a spectacular set average of 115.92 by reeling off three straight legs in 13, 14, & 12 darts. The Dutch veteran won the decisive third set to take the lead, and after Meikle appeared clearly disappointed, Van Barneveld breezed through set four to secure a 3-1 victory. Following his victory, Van Barneveld will now face 2021 World Champion Gerwyn Price in a thrilling third-round tie.
Against Fallon Sherrock, who was attempting to make more history on the grandest stage in sports, Ricky Evans rallied from a set down to emerge victorious by score of 3-1. In another thrilling five-set match, Jim Williams staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Sebastian Bialecki. after winning six of the final seven legs to qualify for the second-round clash against James Wade. Meanwhile, Jamie Hughes suffered his fourth straight loss in the tournament, as Jimmy Hendriks prevailed after a grueling four-set match on his debut at Alexandra Palace.
As the first round of the Cazoo Darts World Championship comes to an end on Day Seven at Alexandra Palace, Wednesday’s action will include a thrilling double session. In the afternoon session, Callan Rydz will compete against Josh Rock and Dave Chisnall will compete against Andrew Gilding. Wednesday’s standout clash has Welsh teenager Lewy Williams competing against three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen, while German number one Gabriel Clemens takes on William O’Connor. The 2022/23 PDC World Darts Championship winner will get £500,000 in rewaed from the $2,500,000 total prize money, while the competition’s runner-up will receive £200,000.
