Van den Bergh defeated Lourence Ilagan 3-0 late on Saturday night at Alexandra Palace, posting the highest average and highest checkout of the competition thus far. During this tie, the former World Matchplay champion averaged 97.20 and dropped just two legs before securing resounding victory to qualify for the third-round. On the grandest platform of Darts, Jock Rock, Martin Lukeman, Cameron Menzies, & Adam Gawlas all won their opening matches and advanced to play their second-round matches.

After a fantastic 2022, Rock continued his stellar form to overcome Jose Justicia 3-1 in his eagerly anticipated World Championship debut. Meanwhile, fellow rising star Lukeman made a stress-free debut by easily dispatching Nobuhiro Yamamoto by score of 3-0. In other matches of the day, Menzies managed 3-1 victory over Brazilian Diogo Portela and Czech youngster Gawlas battled back to defeat former Lakeside Champion Richie Burnett 3-2.

Despite having to hold off a miraculous comeback attempt from the four-time BDO Women’s Champion, Ryan Meikle defeated Lisa Ashton 3-2. Daryl Gurney was the first seeded player to exit the competition after losing to Alan Soutar, who once more dazzled on the Ally Pally stage, 3-0. From the net prize pool of £2,500,000, the 2022/23 PDC World Darts Championship champion will get £500,000 in cash, while the tournament’s runner-up will receive £200,000.
