The World Athletics Championships kicked off on 15 July, it is the eighteenth edition of the competition that is being held nearly after a gap of three years due to Covid-19 pandemic.
All eyes will be on the world’s number one team USA, who has won a total of (381) medals in this competition. This time the competition is being held in Eugene, Oregon and USA will hope to give their all in its own turf. In the last edition of the event, which was held in Doha in 2019, USA won the championship by winning 29 medals(14 gold, 11 silver, 4 bronze) and this year they will be hoping to win the championship one more time.
Talking about India, a total of 23 athletes will compete in this year’s edition. The run has been not that successful for India in this competition, with winning an only medal so far. Oregon22 would be a competition where Indians would look to perform at the highest level and will break the curse of winning only one medal in the history of the World Athletics Championships.
Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Nerraj Chopra is also part of the 23 member squad. Tajinderpal Singh Toor would go for the highest honours in his shot put event, considering his recent fine form. Of a total of 23 squad members, 18 male and 5 female athletes will compete in a total of 13 event categories.
