The fifth day of the World Athletics Championships came to an end yesterday which saw Australia, Brazil, Great Britain and Slovenia each winning their first gold medals on Tuesday as the competition hit the midway point of its 10-day run at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The United States added two more medals to its tally on Tuesday, Rai Benjamin won silver and Trevor Brassitt won the bronze in the men’s 400 metres hurdles. This helped the USA to further extend its lead with 18 medals overall.

In men’s 400 metres hurdles, Brazilian Alison Dos Santos grabbed the gold medal while record-holder Karsten Warholm finished at seventh.

In the women’s high jump event, Australia’s Eleanor Patterson won the gold medal. In men’s 1500 metres Jake Wightman of Great Britain won the gold and Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh won the gold in men’s discus throw.
