The Womenโs World Boxing Championships 2023
The Women World Boxing Championship 2023 is currently underway at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi. The semiannual international competition will feature 12 weight categories and over 350 competitors from over 70 countries.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has chosen Mahindra as the title sponsor of the competition. Meanwhile, the BFI have named MC Mary Kom and Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar as brand ambassadors.
This is the third time that India will host the Womenโs World Boxing Championships 2023. Through the event, the BFI hopes to promote female boxing with the help of stars like Mary Kom and Farhan.
A mass boycott
Ahead of the tournament, eleven countries have decided to boycott and not participate in the upcoming event. The move comes after the IBA agreed to allow Russian and Belarusian boxers to compete under one national flag. The eleven countries boycotting the event are:
- Ukraine
- US
- UK
- Canada
- Poland
- Sweden
- The Netherlands
- Ireland
- The Czech Republic
- Switzerland
- Norway
Moreover, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have declared that the Women World Boxing Championship 2023 will not be considered as qualification for the Paris Olympics 2024.
This is contradictory to what the IBA previously declared, satting it as the main qualification event. There is currently a conflict point between IOC and IBA stemming from 2019, when the IOC suspended IBA due to financial and governance issues.
As such, the IBA also did not involve in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following the change, the IOC announced that it will host separate qualifying events for the 2024 Summer Games.
