When New Zealand defeated England 34-31 at a packed Eden Park, they became the first host nation to win a women’s Rugby World Cup. After Lydia Thompson was sent off in Auckland for a head-on collision with Portia Woodman, England played the final 63 minutes of the game with just 14 players.

At that point, the Red Roses were up 14-0 and maintained their lead until the 72nd minute, when Ayesha Leti-I’iga scored her second try of the game to give the Red Roses the victory. The Black Ferns’ victory gave them their sixth Rugby World Cup championship and made it five times in a row that they had defeated England. With their sixth victory in six Rugby World Cup finals, New Zealand also broke England’s record 30-match winning streak, which began with a setback to the Black Ferns in July 2019.

France produced a strong show of attacking vigor and defensive toughness in a 36-0 victory over Canada in the Bronze Final to round off their Rugby World Cup 2021 campaign. It is the sixth time in the competition that Les Bleues have won bronze, and it is the third time they have defeated Canada in this bronze-medal fixture, having done so in 2002 and 2006.

France led 22-0 at halftime after to tries by Madoussou Fall, player of the match Pauline Bourdon, and Marine Menager, as well as Caroline Drouin’s kick. The French continued to dominate in the second half as prop Annaelle Deshaye scored the opening try before Menager added the final try to secure a comprehensive victory for France.

This year as well, the pool remains the same as the association will pay out £325,000 to the triumphant side and this totals to £10,000 per player if they make it to the final which will take place at Eden Park this year.
