Indian broadcasting giants, Viacom18 have won the broadcasting rights for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) and are set to pay an astounding ₹951 crore, know about the 2023 cricket live streaming 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah announced the official news.

The massive deal will see Viacom broadcast the WIPL across a period of five years.

Viacom 18 secures WIPL broadcasting rights

BCCI secretary Jay Shah shared about the news on Twitter, tweeting:

Congratulations viacom18 for winning the Women’s IPL media rights. Thank you for your faith in BCCI and BCCIWomen. Viacom has committed INR 951 crores which means per match value of INR 7.09 crores for the next 5 years (2023-27). This is massive for Women’s Cricket

Indian Board also releasing an official statement soon after:

₹7 Crore per WIPL match

The enormous deal set between Viacom and BCCI will see the latter receive around ₹7 crore per match. It represents a major step forward in the women’s game, and it will help set up and develop the game. In contrast, the Indian Premier League, who has broadcasting deals with Star Network and Viacom values around INR 118 crore per match.

Broadcasting rights auction policy

The BCCI adopted a closed-bid auction policy for the sale of the WIPL’s broadcasting rights. The vent took the whole day and the BCCI announced the winner on Monday (January 16). Altogether, eight bidders bought the tender document, which was up on sale since December.

The broadcasting rights spanned across a five-year period from 2023 2027. It consisted of three categories:

  • linear (TV)
  • digital
  • combined (TV and digital)

The BCCI sold all the rights globally, inclusive of India. Interestingly, the BCCI chose not to set a base price instead choosing the market to determine its value. This step is in contrast to the men’s IPL last year, where it went close to US$ 6 billion.

BCCI set to unveil WIPL franchises on 25 January

The BCCI has listed 10 cities in the bid document for the upcoming WIPL. Out of those 10, at least eight men’s IPL franchises have confirmed to make a bid for a franchise. So far, five financial bids have been made and the BCCI are set to unveil them on January 25.
