The two captains for the game will be Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty, who won the award by earning the most fan votes, and the current MVP A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces.
Even more than Wilson and Stewart, who were expected to start, Aliyah Boston, the first overall pick, is arguably the most notable starter. With a 65.1% shooting percentage and averages of 15.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, she is off to a great start.
In addition to being the league leader for rookies in each of those statistics, she also is ninth in the league for rebounding, sixth for blocks, and first for field goal percentage. Boston is the first rookie to start an All-Star Game since Shoni Schimmel in 2014 and the eighth rookie overall.
Brittney Griner also makes her All-Star comeback after missing the duration of the 2022 campaign while she was held in detention in Russia on drug-related allegations. Her eighth All-Star participation, which she shares with Tina Thompson for the fourth-most all-time, is the most of any starter in this year’s game.
The league’s top scorer, Jewell Loyd, is the star of the backcourt group. She is leading the league in scoring with 25.4 points per game, which puts her on an unprecedented pace. Only Diana Taurasi in 2006 averaged at least 25 points per game, and she finished with 25.3.
A word should also be said about Jackie Young, who has improved even further from the season in which she earned Most Improved Player. With 20.2 points scored per game, she is fifth in the league in field goal percentage (58.8%), which is absurd for a guard. The Aces’ 11-1 record, which leads the league, is largely due to her performance.
