The tennis world has gathered in southwest London for the upcoming two weeks as Wimbledon begins in SW19. What potential prize money is there for the winner?

The Championships at Wimbledon, a major fixture of the British athletic calendar, have begun, and Novak Djokovic is aiming to defend his 2021 Men’s singles championship and win the All-England club tournament for the fourth time in a row.

As Ashleigh Barty laid up her racquet after claiming her home grand slam in Australia to begin the year, the 2021 Women’s champion won’t be defending her title. Rafael Nadal has won the Australian and French Opens before arriving in London, while Iga Swiatek also triumphed at Roland Garros earlier this month.

But how much money will they all be competing for in total at Wimbledon in 2022? How does it stack up against the two grand slams that have already been played this year?

Wimbledon won’t award ranking points in 2022 despite providing players with a sizable prize fund and reward.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the tournament’s organisers decided to forbid Russian and Belorussian players from participating. After that, ranking points were deducted, which led to several players choosing not to participate. Those who do participate will, in any case, be amply compensated for their efforts.

Wimbledon will have a total purse of £40.35 million GBP in 2022. That comes out to around $49 million USD at the current exchange rate.

The prize money payments for the Men’s and Women’s singles competitions are exactly the same. The prize money for Wimbledon winners in 2022 will be around £2 million GBP ($2.5 million USD at current exchange rates).

The semi-finalists will also receive £535,000 GBP ($636k USD), while the runners-up will receive a check for somewhat more than £1 million GBP ($1.2 million USD).

Players that make it to the first-round proper will receive £50k GBP, or around $78,000 USD. For a second-round appearance, the fee rises to £78,000 GBP. For rounds three, four, and the quarterfinals, the fee ranges from £120,000 to £310,000 GBP (or $147,000 to $380,000k USD).

What Differentiates It From The Other Grand Slams?

After the US Open at Flushing Meadows and the Australian Open in Melbourne, Wimbledon has the third-largest prize pool of the four grand slam tournaments.

The prize money in Australia was £2.32 million GBP ($4.4 million USD), whereas the US Open in 2021 will pay out £1.8 million GBP ($2.5 million).

As tennis returns to normal in September, the US Open’s prize money pool will increase, just as Wimbledon did this year with the first “regular” event since 2019. The victor of the French Open at Roland Garros received a total prize fund of £1.8 million GBP.
