Matthew Ebden/Max Purcell vs Mate Pavic/Nikola Mektic
The winners of the Wimbledon 2022 gentlemen’s doubles competition are Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
The Australian team defeated Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic in a hotly contested final at Centre Court today, winning 7-6(5) 6-7(3) 4-6 6-4 7-6(2) to win their first major title together.
The victory of Ebden and Purcell ends the 23-match winning streak on the grass of world No. 3 Pavic, who was competing despite having a fractured right wrist as a result of a semifinal crash, and world No. 6 Mektic. The second-seeded Croatians had won the championship in each of their previous four grass-court competitions.
Little separated the two teams in an exciting four-hour, 11-minute match; in the first four sets, neither team had more than one service break.
It took the world’s Nos. 31 and 34, Ebden and Purcell, until the tenth game of the fourth set to secure a break and tie the match at two sets apiece by capitalising on Mektic’s serve with outstanding returns.
In the decisive set, Pavic and Mektic took back the initiative by breaking Purcell’s serve in the fifth game to take the lead 3-2. However, the Australians rallied and broke Mektic in the eighth game to tie the match.
The Australians heroically held off two break points in the ninth game of a nail-biting fifth set as the twists and turns persisted.
In the intense final stretch, both teams remained strong, requiring a match tiebreak. The Australians then dominated to win the match and the title.
Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova vs Elise Mertens/Zhang Shuai
Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang were defeated by Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to claim the 2022 Wimbledon women’s doubles championship. The second-seeded team of Krejcikova and Siniakova defeated Mertens and Zhang 6-2, 6-4 to win their second Wimbledon championship.
Krejcikova and Siniakova won the Wimbledon team championship for the first time in 2018. After another victory four years later, Krejcikova and Siniakova currently own a combined total of five Grand Slam titles. After winning the Australian Open to kick off the 2022 season, Krejcikova and Siniakova were unable to play for the French Open crown.
