Speculation grows around Rohit’s T20I retirement since his absence post T20 World Cup. A senior BCCI source revealed Rohit’s deliberate choice, citing discussions with selectors and his voluntary decision to focus on ODIs, especially during the past year.
This decision, made in consultation with the selectors, aligns with Rohit’s desire to concentrate on ODI and Test cricket.
With 148 T20Is under his belt, Rohit has been a stalwart in the format, amassing 3853 runs at a staggering strike rate of nearly 140, including four centuries. He went on to score 597 runs in the World Cup campaign.
His absence from T20Is opens up opportunities for emerging talents, with Hardik Pandya having predominantly led the Indian team in the format in recent times.
As Rohit steps back from T20Is, the spotlight now turns to the next generation of openers, including Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
All proven IPL performers, these young guns present a promising future for Indian cricket, although the selectors and BCCI acknowledge that Rohit might be called upon if the younger crop faces challenges.
The decision to retire from T20Is also underscores Rohit’s strategic approach to managing his workload. At 36, the Indian skipper recognizes the importance of preserving his fitness, especially with a packed Test schedule ahead.
With seven Tests scheduled between December 2023 and March 2024, Rohit aims to lead India to another World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025.
We have to wait for the next 10 days, every picture will be cleared.
Just want to say that Rohit Sharma is not going anywhere from Test till 2025 WTC and'll most probably play the CT too.
