It seems that Patrick Mahomes isn’t all that interesting? Or, most likely, Patrick Mahomes, as portrayed in Quarterback’s carefully crafted portrayal of him, isn’t very fascinating. He’s a dad, dog owner, good football thrower, Super Bowl champion, and a bully when he has to be. One of the best parts is when he says, “I’m here all day!” Unlike in Last Chance U, when we get a nuanced picture of each player, we don’t get that here. In reality, the difficulty of the storyline decreases as players improve. Cousins, as an elderly quarterback in the middle of the pack who is desperately trying to maintain his leadership position, is marginally more interesting.
When it comes to Quarterbacks, the quiet former Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota stands out because of how much is riding on his performance. The well-known journeyman was widely known to have a subpar season. As a result, watching Mariota go through a season where he wins, loses, fights, cheers, and remains the utmost professional tells us the most about what it’s like to be an NFL player.
What To Expect
None of this is the filmmakers’ fault, of course; journalists have a tough time these days getting interviews with athletes outside of their sponsorship obligations, which contributes to the problem of a lack of openness. However, this raises the question of whether Quarterback’s upcoming second season (Netflix has not yet announced further episodes) might be better served by shifting its attention to someone like Mahomes’ backup, Blaine Gabbert.
