The heart-warming Google’s Doodle is showing various stages of Lydia’s life and career. In one doodle, she’s donning her signature short hair and dark-rimmed spectacles.
The search engine Google is honouring her today via Doodle as it’s Lydia’s 77th birthday.
Who was Lydia Tin Ha Sum?
Lydia aka Lydia Shum Din-ha was born in Shanghai on July 21st, 1945. She had a glorious career, she began her acting debut in adolescence with Shaw Brothers Studio, which was a biggest production house of that time.
She wasn’t only loved as a comedian but also as an actress capable of portraying many relatable roles. She gained her fame through a role in Mad, Mad, Mad World franchise, Double Fattiness in 1988 and A Recipe for the Heart in 1997.
Aside from working in Chinese-language, she had also worked in an English-language based hit Singaporean sitcom which made widely known star not only in Asia but also in North America.
Living with Lydia was aired on Channel 5 from 2001 to 2005. She portrayed the role of Lydia Lum, a Hong Kong based restaurateur and a widowed mother of 2 who moves to Singapore after her Dim Sum establishment in Hong Kong is hit with a false case of food poisoning.
This show was broadcast not only in Singapore but also in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and the United States.
Google’s Doodle is celebrating the actress 77ty birthday who is affectionately known as “Fei Fei” which means Fat Fat in Cantonese.
She gained her breakthrough in 1967 after she was casted in a popular show “Enjoy Yourself Tonight”. Later, in 1973, she was seen in a film “The House of 72 Tenants”.
This film was based on the daily lives of tenants who live in run-down flats. This movie surpassed many other blockbusters and topped Hong Kong’s box office in 1973.
Her few other acting roles include as Gei wo yi ge wen in 1968, Yu lou san feng in 1968, A Talented Lady in 1968, The Land of Many Perfumes in 1968, The Great Singer in 1967, Yu nu de mi mi, in 1967, Don’t Call Me Uncle in 1975, The Wandering Life in 1975 and many others.
According to reports, Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada started honouring June 1st as Fei Fei day in 2008. Mayor Sullivan declared the day in Vancouver on 26th February 2008, a week after Lydia’s death.
in September, 2006, it was discovered that she had a liver tumor and cancer near her gallbladder due to which Shum underwent several chemotherapy and rounds of kidney dialysis treatment and finally, on February 19th, 2008, at the age of 62, Shum passed away after her family decided to withdraw her life support following a pleural effusion.
