Have a look at the meaning of Travis Head’s finger celebration during IND vs AUS 4th test match

On Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test, the strange finger celebration by Travis Head following the removal of Rishabh Pant was explained by a commentator.

The Australian all-rounder Travis Head made a significant breakthrough on the last day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), continuing to harass India with the bat and the ball. Head’s eccentric celebration after dismissing India’s Rishabh Pant in the final session became the focus of the cricket community.

With Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal bolstering their prospects for a draw, India was at 112 for 3 after tea. However, Head, who was trusted by captain Pat Cummins, lured Pant into a long-on aerial pull shot, which Mitchell Marsh caught securely.

Travis Head pointed his finger into a circle formed with his other hand after breaking a crucial partnership by removing Rishabh Pant. The cricket community was buzzing after the gesture. While some found it amusing, others weren’t so sure. Cricket Australia even posted the video on social media, but then took it down, which further fuelled the flames.

Nobody understood the purpose of Head’s celebration for a while. It was deemed strange by some, and quite unsuitable by others. People began debating whether it violated any laws, with some speculating that it might be classified as an obscene gesture, a Level 1 offense.

However, James Brayshaw, a pundit on Channel 7, intervened to clarify the situation. Head’s celebration, he clarified, wasn’t arbitrary. Head reportedly made a joke about having to “put the digit on ice” following his incredible spell in 2022 after taking 4/10 against Sri Lanka.

“So that was the celebration. He said ‘I just got him and I’m putting it back on ice’.” It is a running joke in the Australian team which alludes to Travis Head’s finger being so hot that he has to put it in a cup of ice as explained by Pat Cummins.

It was a reference to that game, according to Brayshaw with Head talking about putting his hot finger in ice. This appears to be Travis Head’s way of bringing up what he stated about icing his finger back then.

Pant’s dismissal triggered a collapse, with Ravindra Jadeja and centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy falling soon after for meagre scores. India slumped to 130-6, leaving Yashasvi Jaiswal, who ground out a resilient half-century, and Washington Sundar to salvage the game in the final session.

Earlier in the day, Jasprit Bumrah shone with his 13th Test five-wicket haul, helping India bowl Australia out for 234 and setting a challenging target of 340. As the day unfolded, the stage was set for a gripping finale, with both teams vying to edge ahead in the series before the decider.
