The AIFF was approached by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) with a request to play a game in India, but the AIFF responded that it could not pay the appearance fee that Argentina would have wanted. Argentina would have demanded between $4 million and $5 million (Rs 32-40 crore), according to a report by Times of India, which is far more than the football association can now afford to play a friendly in India.

There was no support from a reliable sponsor.

According to the AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran, the match might have been organised if it had received support from a reliable sponsor, but no such sponsor stepped forward. Some supporters, who were excited to watch Messi play in India, were disappointed by the decision to deny the match. The AIFF, however, said that because of its budgetary limitations, it was forced to make this choice.

Argentina had intended to play two friendly in South Asia, one each in Bangladesh and India. Both ideas, nevertheless, fell through because neither country was able to quickly raise the required finances. The two friendlies Argentina played in June were against Australia in Beijing on June 15 and Indonesia in Jakarta on June 19.

It would have been the second time for Argentina.

The Argentina football team has previously competed in India. They faced Venezuela in a friendly match in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium in 2011. Argentina defeated the opposition 1-0, with captain Lionel Messi scoring the game’s lone goal. Over 85,000 people attended the game, and it was a remarkable event for them.

Argentina defeated Indonesia 2-0 to complete its Asian trip.

Argentina defeated Indonesia 2-0 on Monday in a friendly match, giving the world champions a perfect start to their brief tour of Asia with two victories from two. Leandro Paredes scored a long-range thunderbolt, and Cristian Romero added a headed goal in the second half.

The South Americans outplayed an Indonesian squad that played with heart and was inspired by a passionate 56,000-strong audience that applauded every pass, throw and venture into the Argentine half of the pitch.
