Who is Terry Medwin?
Medwin embarked on his club career with his hometown team Swansea Town, starting as an amateur and transitioning to a professional in 1949. He marked his senior team debut in January 1952 against Blackburn Rovers, showcasing his prowess on the field. Before his move to Spurs for £25,000 in May 1956, he impressively netted 57 goals in 147 league appearances for Swansea.
Medwin’s debut with Spurs was memorable, as he secured two goals in a decisive 4–1 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale in August 1956. Throughout his tenure with Tottenham, he exhibited remarkable skill, tallying 72 goals in 215 matches across various competitions. His contributions were instrumental in the club’s Double victory in 1960–61 and their triumphant 1962 FA Cup Final campaign.
As an agile winger, he made 15 appearances during the 1960-61 season, finding the net five times. He sustained his impact as Spurs successfully retained the FA Cup in 1962. However, his tenure with the club came to an abrupt halt in May 1963 during a tour of South Africa when he endured a devastating leg break, ultimately leading to his premature retirement from professional football.
Terry Medwin: international career and post-retirement journey
Medwin made his debut for Wales in April 1953, playing a crucial role in their 3-2 victory against Ireland on their turf. He participated in four out of the five matches Wales played in the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Notably, he scored the game-winning goal in the initial round’s 2–1 play-off, which propelled Wales into the quarter-finals. During his tenure from 1953 to 1963, Medwin earned 30 caps and scored six goals for his national team.
After retiring from active play, Medwin transitioned into management, taking charge at Cheshunt. He also shared his expertise as a coach with various clubs, including Cardiff City, Fulham, and Norwich City. Additionally, he served as an assistant manager under John Toshack at Swansea. In 1971, he became the trainer for a Wales XI team, which embarked on a tour across Asia and Oceania under the management of Dave Bowen.
