The 30-year-old Cameroonian striker becomes the first player after Zinedine Zidane to get sent off after scoring a goal in World Cup. Zidane got sent off in the FIFA World Cup 2006 final against Italy for headbutting Materazzi.

Aboubakar scored a late injury-time winner for Cameroon in the last match of their World Cup campaign. He was overwhelmed by scoring a late winner against the five-time champion that he took his shirt off in joy.

The referee Ismail Elfath showed Aboubakar a second yellow resulting in a sent-off for doing a shirtless celebration. He was earlier booked for a challenge on Martinelli in the 81st minute of the game.

Players often get carried away with their goal celebration and remove their shirts in the course. In such a case, the referee shows them a yellow card for breaching FIFA Law 12.

Law 12 of IFAB doesn’t allow the players to do time-wasting celebrations.

The IFAB Law 12 says “While it is permissible for a player to demonstrate his joy when a goal has been scored, the celebration must not be excessive.

“Reasonable celebrations are allowed, but the practice of choreographed celebrations is not to be encouraged when it results in excessive time-wasting, and referees are instructed to intervene in such cases.

“A player must be cautioned if:

  • In the opinion of the referee, he makes gestures that are provocative, derisory, or inflammatory
  • He climbs on to a perimeter fence to celebrate a goal being scored
  • He removes his shirt or covers his head with his shirt
  • He covers his head or face with a mask or other similar item”
