Who Was Sitaram Kesri?
Sitaram Kesri was a well-known Indian politician and parliament. He has been in the news because congress is going to elect its another non-Gandhi president and he was the last one.
He was born on 15 November 1919 in Danapur, Bihar, British India. He did his schooling at the local school. Later, he attended Patna University.
He was married to Kesher Devi. They have one son and two daughters together.
He died on 24 October 2000 in New Delhi, India. At the time of his death, she was 80 years old.
His Career
Sitaram Kesri joined the Indian freedom struggle when he was just 13 years old, starting a relationship with Indian National Congress Party that would continue for over seven decades yet end in disgrace.
He was often detained by the British Indian authorities between 1930 and 1942, the Gandhian era of India’s independence fight. He was one of the young and energetic members of the Bihar Congress. He was chosen as the president of the Bihar Congress in 1973 and the AICC’s treasurer in 1980.
He was chosen as a Lok Sabha representative from the Bihar district of Katihar in 1967. Then, from July 1971 until April 2000, he served five terms as a member of the Rajya Sabha. In the Congress administrations of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and PV Narasimha Rao, Kesri served as a union minister.
Sitaram Kesri succeeded PV Narasimha Rao as president of the Congress party when he resigned in September 1996. Despite having political expertise, he never had great popularity among the general public. His functioning and, subsequently, his performance were affected by this.
The party suffered throughout Kesri’s two years as president of the Congress. He eventually stepped down from his position in 1998.
