A suspect opened fire with a pump-action shotgun inside a construction site in downtown Auckland, leaving two people dead and at least 10 more injured. The incident took place hours before the Women’s World Cup was scheduled to begin.

Around 7:20 in the morning, the shooter allegedly entered the structure before starting to fire. When police arrived on the scene, they found two dead bodies within minutes.

Authorities reported that among them was the male shooter, who was found dead at the scene.

Who is Matu Tangi Matua?

The shooter was identified as 24-year-old Matu Tangi Matua Reid. He was detained at home for five months after being convicted of domestic violence offences on March 28 in Auckland District Court.

Although an ankle tag was watching over Reid, he was given permission to go to the construction site. It’s unclear why this is, but people on house detention can leave their homes to continue working at an authorised workplace.

Prior to his sentencing in the Auckland District Court earlier this year, Reid had already admitted to charges of obstructing breathing, wounding with intent to injure, intentional damage, and male assaulting a female.

He was sentenced to five months of house detention on March 28 when he appeared before Judge Stephen Bonnar KC to be punished for the four offences.

With home detention, sentenced criminals are sometimes required to remain in their permitted dwellings. However, under certain circumstances, they may be allowed to continue working at a particular, permitted place of business.

The Heroic Move Of The Auckland Police

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins verified the attack’s weaponry and also stated that he understood there was no known “political or ideological motivation” for the attack. He also praised the police for their actions, calling them “nothing short of heroic.”

Police Commissioner Andrew Koster said, “In an attempt to engage the offender, our armed offender’s squad, assisted by the special tactics group, located the offender inside a lift shaft where he had barricaded himself.”

Meanwhile, the injured cop is expected to have surgery. “The accused shot at police, wounding one of them.” According to Police Commissioner Andrew Koster, after exchanging gunfire, the shooter was later discovered dead.
