Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were engaged in a heated argument during RCB vs LSG in Lucknow, know about the IPL 2023 players fine and who will pay itย
Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were each fined 100% of their match money for their incident on the wicket following the match between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 1.
Things between the two cricketing icons at the Lucknow Ekana Stadium suddenly got worse.
Who pays the fine of players in IPL 2023 and is it cut by teams from their salary
To separate Kohli and Gambhir, the teammates and support personnel of the two teams had to work together.
The LSG bowler from Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq, who played a significant role during the entire match, was fined 50% of the match money.
A pro rata calculation and consideration of Kohli’s annual revenue of Rs 15 crore result in an estimated match fee of Rs 1.07 crore. An entire season of 14 games was used to get the number.
If RCB advanced further in the playoffs and played more games, Kohli’s per-match fee would decrease (Rs 15 crore divided by the total number of matches played during the season).
Any estimate would show that the RCB star would lose close to Rs 1 crore.
But the question is, will Kohli truly pay this huge fine? No.
An RCB source stated toย Cricbuzz:
Players put their bodies on the line for the team and we respect that and as a culture we don’t cut the fine from their salaries.”
It’s unclear how much money LSG coach Gambhir makes because everything is done in a private relationship between him and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka.
The assertion that he receives a match fee of Rs. 25 lakh is hypothetical.
Gambhir won’t likely be required to pay the fine out of his salary; the franchise will probably bear the cost.
One may compare Naveen-ul-Haq, who receives Rs 50 lakh from LSG for a season.
However, the system varies from franchise to franchise. The BCCI also sends an invoice for all fines imposed against a team at the end of each season, according to the Cricbuzz article.
Franchises are then responsible for paying it; whether or not to deduct it from a particular player’s salary is a matter of team internal policy.
