Zac Segal calls on ICE raid
A Boston University student named Zac Segal is currently going viral after he publicly claimed to have spent months asking ICE federal agents to investigate workers at the Allston Car Wash. Following the request, ICE carried out an immigration raid and detained nine employees on November 4, following which Segal posted about his involvement. In his post, Zac accused the workers of taking jobs unlawfully and urged immigration authorities to “pump up the numbers.”
Meanwhile, the workers’ attorney, Todd Pomerleau, immediately pushed back and stated that his clients had valid work permits. However, they were simply unable to retrieve them during the raid, while describing the raid as carried out with military-style vehicles and armed agents. One of the detained workers had reportedly lived in the United States for over three decades.
Zac Segal speaks out
In response to the backlash, Zac Segal stated that his post triggered a wave of death threats and even shared messages from fellow students who labelled him as a racist and a fascist. The BU College Democrats also condemned his actions and cut off cooperation with the College Republicans club. However, the National College Republican leadership praised his actions and encouraged other young conservatives to alert ICE about suspected violations in their own communities.
Zac Segal defended himself in a later post, saying that he simply reported what he believed was suspicious activity. He also argued that anyone should do the same and condemned threats against him. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security further complicated the narrative after it publicly stated that it did not carry out the raid on Segal’s tip, dismissing the idea as “a silly rumor.”
