He fought with the Nazis during the Third Reich as part of the 14th Waffen, aka SS Galincha.

Following the debacle made by Rota, he quickly issued an apology and took full responsibility for the mistake.
Yaroslav Hunka dubbed a war “hero”
The incident took place on Friday, 22 September 2023 at the Canadian parliament which recently hosted a visit from Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. As Yaroslav Hunka was seated in the gallery, Anthony Rota acknowledged him as a war “hero” which gained a standing ovation and a round of applause. Zelensky even waved his hand in approval.
Anthony Rota stated:
We have here in the chamber today a Ukrainian-Canadian veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today, even at his age of 98. He’s a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service. Thank you”
Following the incident, several Jewish groups condemned his actions, to which Anthony came out to issue an apology. Rota apologized through a statement on Sunday, 24 September, saying:
I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to (honor Hunka). I wish to make clear that no one, including fellow parliamentarians and the Ukraine delegation, was aware of my intention or of my remarks before I delivered them”
He further admitted that the entire thing was his own initiative expressed his deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and across the world.
Yaroslav Hunka bio and age
Yaroslav Hunka was a former Nazi soldier who was born in Urman, Second Polish Republic (now Ukraine). Although the exact date of his birth is unknown, reports indicate that Yaroslav Hunka is currently 98 years old.
As such, he was born around 1925. After serving in the Nazi army during World War II in Europe, Hunka immigrated to Canada after the war ended. He eventually joined the Ukrainian-Canadian community and remained active among Waffen SS veteran circles. He even maintained a blog on the Internet around the early 2010s where he described his time from 1941-1943 as the happiest years of his life.

Yaroslav Hunka army career
Yaroslav Hunka began his Nazi army career by volunteering to join the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) in 1943. During his time there he completed training in Munich and Neuhammer (present day Świętoszów).
The 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division, also called the Galicia Division, and featured a voluntary unit mostly consisting of ethnic Ukrainians under Nazi command. Later the following year in 1944, Hunka got deployed into combat against Red Army soldiers on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. He eventually migrated to Canada after the war ended.
