The problem appeared to be brought on by the Chinese hurdler Yanni Wu’s false start, which resulted in Yarraji’s reaction. At first, Yarraji and Wu were informed that they had been eliminated owing to the incorrect start.
Jyothi Yarraji was in the adjacent lane when the officials unexpectedly approached her and showed her the “Disqualified” card after reviewing the replays. The holder of the Indian national record objected and requested to independently review the replays. Authorities from AFI acknowledged that following protests, the officials went back and double-checked their judgement, changing it to reinstate Jyothi and DQing Wu.
Wu then protested and asked for permission to run in defiance of the law; she was granted this permission and finished second, giving Jyothi the bronze. The official final result sheet, however, listed Jyothi as the silver medallist and Wu as DQ.
