Naveen contested in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and he won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 74 kg category. Naveen Malik defeated, Muhammad Sharif Tahir of Pakistan in the finals with a score of 9-0.

Naveen Malik is an Indian wrestler, whose father Dharampal Malik, owns a small piece of land in Pugthala village (Haryana). He has been doing the same chores for the past 10 years so that his sons shine on the mat. He has been traveling about 35-40 km every day from his village to Sonepat to deliver milk, butter, ghee, and homecooked food to his sons — Naveen and elder brother Parveen.

Naveen followed the footsteps of his elder brother, who was pursuing Greco-Roman wrestling. In year 2016, Parveen Malik got employed by the Indian Navy as a petty officer and shifted to Raipur Akhada in Sonepat, Haryana, India where the Navy wrestlers train. Naveen Malik also shifted along with his brother. “Apart from studies, Naveen Malik used to cook food, clean rooms, and do other work while staying with Parveen and he also began practicing wrestling.

Naveen was a very quick learner and he never shied away from putting in the extra effort.  His brother stated, “The best thing about him is that he listens to the coaches and is very focused”. Malik began competing at the junior level in 2020 and won junior national gold in years 2021 and 2022.

No smartphone

As per media reports it is said that The wrestlers are advised to avoid using smartphones when they are at the akhada as the coaches believe them to be the biggest distraction. “Naveen uses the basic phone and whenever he goes overseas for a tournament, he borrows a smartphone from his brother.

Naveen Malik made his first international debut at the U-23 World Championships last year in 2021 and clinched 74 kg gold in his second competition in the same year.
