Chikkara won the title after defeating Kyrgyzstanโs Abdymalik Karachov 4-3 in the menโs 57kg category, on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Tirana, Albania.
Chirag Chikkara wins Under-23 Wrestling World Championships title
18-year-old Indian grappler Chirag Chikkara became just the second male wrestler to win gold at the Under-23 World Championship. Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat had previously attained the title in 2022. Besides them woman grappler Reetika Hooda is the only other person to have won the U-23 World Wrestling Championship gold. Chirag won the final match through a dramatic comeback in the final few seconds after previously trailing 2-3.
Ahead of the finals, Chirag had defeated Kazakhstanโs Allan Oralbek in the semi-final Iunus Iavbatirov in the quarter-final. He started of the tournament by beating Japanโs Gatuko Ozawa 6-1 in the first round. Notably, the recent win marks Chiragโs first championship title after suffering a knee injury that he suffered in the Under-16 national championships in Haryana. The youngster had to quit wrestling for three years to fully recover from the injury.

Chirag Chikkara is an upcoming Indian professional wrestler who hails from from Juan village in the Sonepat district of Haryana, India. Chikkara is currently just 18 years old, and recently won a gold medal in the menโs 57kg category at the under-23 World Wrestling Championships. Chikkaraโs father Dinesh, works as an electrician on contractual basis, in one of the government-run sugar mills in Sonepat, Haryana.

Wrestling journey
Chirag Chikkara started out his wrestling journey about seven years ago, when his father Dinesh felt like his then 11-year-old son had been gaining excess weight. After speaking to his brother, Virender, the duo decided to enrol young Chirag in a local wrestling academy. Despite initial hesitation, Chirag continued attending and initially made friends and started developing a liking for wrestling. He has since grown to excel in the sport and, with his latest achievement being a testament to his skills and hard work.
