What the coach said?
After the Cougars’ contentious 22–21 victory over Utah on Saturday night, the cheerleading coach at BYU claimed that she lost consciousness after being hit in the head with a water bottle that was thrown from the stands.
When BYU kicked a field goal with three seconds remaining to win, fans hurled items onto the field. After a defensive holding call erased a fourth-down sack of quarterback Jake Retzlaff, the Cougars had their game-winning drive.
In a statement to the newspaper, BYU stated that it was looking into the event but did not have any other comments at the time. A woman standing near to BYU’s cheerleaders on the sideline is struck in the head by an object thrown from the stands in a video.
After BYU’s game-winning field goal, Utah had the opportunity for a spectacular kickoff return, but the multiple-lateral return ended close to midfield, and the play would not have been included. After Utah’s sideline was reported for unsportsmanlike behaviour, athletic director Mark Harlan expressed his disapproval to the officiating staff.
Harlan claimed after the game that it was “completely stolen from us.”
